Sustainability Analyst
The Sustainability Analyst supports EarthShift Global in the areas of life cycle inventory (LCI), life cycle assessment (LCA) consulting and critical review, greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, sustainability assessment, and planning. The Analyst will conduct LCI, LCA and GHG studies for clients, and be involved in project management. The Analyst will help our clients understand and communicate their environmental impacts, while providing actionable insights to help create change.
The Analyst will assist in improving company procedures. The Analyst may attend conferences with the dual purpose of keeping up to date with the methodologies and developing business for EarthShift Global. The Analyst will also be expected to keep abreast of and participate in developments in the LCA methodology. This will include providing EarthShift Global representation in organizations such as ACLCA, SETAC and AIChE. The successful candidate is invited to participate in other areas of EarthShift Global business (Sustainable Return on Investment tools and training, for example).
EarthShift Global is a growing company, and the Analyst will be asked to perform various tasks related to the day-to-day operation of the business. The Analyst will be expected to respond to phone calls and e-mails requesting technical support, provide information about our products and services, and, at times, provide administrative support. The analyst will also be expected to keep in close contact with clients, even when there are no active projects, and to develop and maintain their own network of potential clients as part of ongoing business development efforts.
The ideal candidate has strong technical capabilities related to LCA, systems modeling, data collection and interpretation, and the ability to identify and fix inconsistencies in data and prose.
Qualifications
- Passion for sustainability;
- Master’s degree or equivalent in a physical science, environmental science, or engineering;
- 2-3 years LCA experience, preferably in an industrial or consulting setting;
- Solid understanding of LCA and/or GHG accounting principles;
- Practical experience with LCA software tools and databases, preferably GaBi or SimaPro;
- Have completed a peer- or critically reviewed LCA;
- Willingness to travel as necessary for training, client engagements, and conferences (as safety allows).
- Disciplined and able to work independently for extended periods;
- Ability to work effectively in a virtual environment (web meetings, conference calls, remote contact with colleagues);
- Strong collaboration skills and an ability to contribute towards a positive team dynamic;
- Exceptionally high standards for accuracy and quality of work;
- Excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills; and
- Willingness to travel as necessary for training, client engagements, and conferences (as safety allows).
Responsibilities
- Gather life cycle inventory data through research and client sources;
- Illustrate product and process systems graphically using flow charts;
- Model product and process systems utilizing various software tools;
- Perform Life Cycle Assessment;
- Documentation of LCA reports per ISO14040 and 14044 standards;
- Manage complex timelines that meet a client’s needs;
- Conduct report review meetings for clients, providing product analysis based on LCA results;
- Assist in the development of customer specific tools for the translation of impact assessment data to commonly understandable units of measure;
- Perform GHG inventory and analysis;
- Perform other life cycle type requests using appropriate tools;
- Represent EarthShift Global at ACLCA, SETAC and AIChE or other organizations; and
- Keep abreast of changes in the LCA field.

Sustainability Intern
Intern Project Focus: Developing New Avenues For Circularity In The Electronics Sector
Internship start/duration: October 2023/10 months (with possible extension), up to 40 hours/week
The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded EarthShift Global a grant to explore the application of circular economy principles in the electronics industry. EarthShift Global is hiring an intern to work on this project.
The intern will support EarthShift Global and partners in the current funded project focused on Developing New Avenues For Circularity In The Electronics Sector. The intern is expected to assist with data collection, stakeholder consultation and planning, and summarization of information into one or more reports. The intern will also have the opportunity to learn about circularity principles, life cycle inventory (LCI), life cycle assessment (LCA), greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, and sustainability assessment and planning.
The Internship program will include the following:
- Assess the current state of transition towards the circular economy in the US electronic sector and analyse possible transition scenarios, as well as their outcomes and impacts.
- Use appropriate models for analysing and quantifying the various implications and trade-offs and assessing the sustainability of circular economy in the Waste from Electronic Equipment (WEEE) sector.
- Derive policy recommendations for policy-makers at the US local, national, and global levels, including recommendations on governance issues, will be derived from the research.
- Participate in joint activities which could take the form of clustering of projects, participation in workshops, conferences, and dissemination.
The ideal candidate should be interested in developing technical capabilities related to circularity, systems thinking, data collection and interpretation, and be able to identify and fix inconsistencies in data and written communications.
Qualifications
- Passion for circular economy and sustainability
- Strong qualitative and quantitative data collection and analytical skills
- Enrolled in a Masters or Ph.D program in sustainability or circular economy (preferred)
- Graduate level course in Electrical or Electronics Engineering (preferred)
- Disciplined and able to work independently for extended periods
- Ability to work effectively in a virtual environment (web meetings, conference calls, remote contact with colleagues)
- Strong collaboration skills and an ability to contribute towards a positive team dynamic
- Exceptionally high standards for accuracy and quality of work
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools
- Willingness to travel as necessary for stakeholder consultations and conferences
Expected results
- Develop an inventory of available WEEE that can be recovered in the US
- Report about feasibility, environmental, social and economic impacts, and further implementation potential of WEEE recovery and value-addition
- Build capacity through increased awareness of Circular Economy potential in electronic waste management.
- Identify regulatory, organizational and technical solutions that are capable of removing barriers and promoting increased circularity in WEEE in the US.
- Identify and evaluate the potential of establishing Eco-Industrial Parks with particular focus on the electric and electronic equipment industry.
