The management of agricultural soils via conservation practices presents a significant opportunity to store carbon while creating co-benefits related to long-term food production security, water use and quality, biodiversity, and other social and environmental factors. While corporate GHG target setting standards like SBTi recognize the validity of these actions, capturing the benefit of SOC flux in LCAs for corporate GHG accounting and reporting can be complex. This talk will review the corporate GHG standards and requirements for reporting positive SOC impacts and discuss strategies for reporting these impacts using LCA-based approaches.
About the Speakers:
Grant Ivison-Lane, Founder/Managing Principal at Terranewt
Grant Ivison-Lane is the Founder and Managing Principal of Terranewt, an advisory and consulting services company for nature-based products and programs. Grant’s background is in corporate GHG accounting and ecosystem services assessment. At CIBO Technologies Grant led the development of one of the first products to use process-based modeling for inventory and intervention GHG accounting. Grant has been engaged with standards development as a member of the GHGP Land Sector and Removals Guidance and the Actions and Market Instruments working groups. He is also a part-time faculty member at Colorado State University where he teaches Scope 3 GHG accounting.
Mariana Ortega Ramirez, Senior Sustainability Analyst
Mariana joined EarthShift Global after building a thriving sustainability consulting practice specializing in agriculture, forestry, livestock, and fishing, with special attention to the mapping of stakeholder perspectives. She conducted projects for consulting firms, government agencies, and non-profits, developing greenhouse gas inventories and projections, designing climate change mitigation measures and scenario analysis, and analyzing co-benefits between sustainable development goals and climate change mitigation policy agendas.
At EarthShift Global, Mariana works on lifecycle studies for clients in the agricultural, textile, industrial processes, and energy sectors. Her experience in material flow accounting, handprint assessments, S-ROI, and LCA for policy programs such as 45Q is continuously increasing with practice. Her educational background in engineering and industrial ecology, plus her experience collaborating with a myriad of sectors in various arenas has developed into an ability to grasp technical aspects in production processes, and also bigger pictures.
Mariana studied environmental engineering at the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico, doing a semester abroad at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. Later, she graduated from an Erasmus Mundus Master’s program in Industrial Ecology, attending Graz University, Delft University of Technology, and Leiden University. She specialized in LCA at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) in Leiden.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) flux can contribute a significant proportion of the total carbon balance of agricultural commodities depending on the location and farm management practices. That being said, modeling and integrating SOC flux into an LCA can be difficult. Using IPCC Tier 1 or 2 factors can be a simple and straightforward way to capture this, but these are often coarse estimates of annual flux and we may want to be more precise or accurate depending on the use-case, in particular when we are trying to be sensitive to annual fluctuations in weather or farm management, or report removals in alignment with Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) or Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) standards. When we choose to proceed with more complex IPCC Tier 3 approaches we should evaluate the considerations below.
