Managing Uncertainty in Leading LCA Software

About the Webinar:
Uncertainty is inherent to life cycle assessment — in background data, in characterization factors, in the assumptions practitioners make when boundaries and data gaps require simplification. How that uncertainty is represented, and how transparently it is communicated, can meaningfully change how LCA results are interpreted and used in decision-making.
This webinar provides a practical, side-by-side look at how four widely used LCA software platforms — GaBi, SimaPro, openLCA, and MatterPD — handle uncertainty in practice. César Camou will walk through the uncertainty features available in each tool, with particular attention to MatterPD, demonstrating how practitioners can identify, quantify, and communicate uncertainty within their own studies. The session is intended to help LCA practitioners better understand the strengths and limitations of the tools they rely on, and to make more informed choices about how uncertainty is presented in their results.
About the Speakers:
Cesar Camou. Sustainability Analyst, EarthShift Global
César Camou brings extensive LCA (life cycle assessment) experience across sectors including biofuels, electronics, and agriculture, having worked with both large and small organizations. A highlight of his career was leading a major mezcal production study for the state of Michoacán, Mexico, coordinating dozens of stakeholders from growers to government agencies. He finds particular fulfillment in seeing LCA methodologies inform early-stage planning decisions, and is encouraged by growing corporate interest in sustainability. Academically, César holds a bachelor's in Sustainable Materials Science and a master's in Sustainability Science from UNAM, and has co-authored a book chapter on sustainable decision-making for new materials and technologies.
Lise Laurin. CEO & Founder, EarthShift Global
Lise Laurin, CEO of EarthShift Global, has been working for over 25
years to support enterprises in their endeavor to reduce social and
environmental impacts. While she struggled through statistics in
thermodynamics, she learned a bit better later in life through practical
application in both Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Sustainability
Return on Investment (S-ROI). She lead the working group to develop the
“Addressing ill-characterized uncertainty” section of the LCA
capabilities roadmap and continues to serve on the ACLCA technical
steering committee. She was awarded the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award
by the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA).

Allocation and Handling of Multi-output Product Systems

In this course, you will learn what ISO 14044 means by “avoiding allocation” as well as the most common ways of apportioning impacts between products coming out of the same process or system.
